I'm a Canadian originally and I see our defacto absorption into the US as an inevatibility. Similarly the European Union is smudging boundries between countries. This is not n ...[text shortened]... ut, the loss of national identity is unfortunate.
Any thoughts?
I value all the differences between all peoples.
I felt such a need (to get away from mcdonalds) that I went to Mongolia last year.
In the capital, i was greatly dissapointed. My hotel room had a really fast broadband connection to the internet.
In the city, i was mildly dissapointed. But there were "illegal" street merchants (selling the most wonderful stuffed pita bread... slurp...) just like in Bombay and Delhi.
In the country -- especially in the near Gobi, there was what I needed. Strangness to replenish the soul and make life a mystery again.
I don't see any good thing about "americanization" and I hope you are wrong.
If "americanization" becomes a fact, it is for the same reason that capitalism wins.
It is the nature of every living, thinking thing to be greedy and comfortable.
That isn't something to shun or to fight as Bin Laden does.
It is something to be examined and turned to advantage. People will pay millions for "different". So be different. Not american.
