Iam a decendant of "Quakers". What most people don't realise is that the term "Quaker" is a derrogatory term for a religious sect that
calls themselves "The Society of Friends" and not "Quakers".The term "Quaker" referrs to the believers shaking in the presence of God.
It is a term of degradition and not politically correct.
As a decendant of The Society of Friends I am appauled at the insensitivity of The Quaker Oats Company and I am currently seeking an attourney to take on this monumental case.

I thought Quakers were northerners who helped slaves escape via the Underground Railroad.

I thought the Shakers were the ones who were known for shaking in the presence of God. They have pretty much all died out as they did not believe in marriage. They made really incredible furniture though.

You are right about the shakers kirksey.
The Quakers did their thing when the founder preached and
they felt the presence of God.It makes me wonder now what the proper name for "The Shakers"is??As this sounds like another lawsuit against furniture "knock offs"called shaker that are not really made by the Shakers.

The Shakers shook, and the Quakers quaked.

I know some Friends that call themselves Quakers, so I doubt the lawsuit will get far.

Members of the Society of Friends were among the first in America to find slavery in violation of their conscience, and were among the first to speak out against the peculiar institution. The Society of Friends was the first religious body to oppose slavery, and many worked for the underground railroad.

One of the all time greatest movies is based on the conflict between conscience and the intrusion of the world... "Friendly Persuasion" with Gregory Peck. I loved it when it came out. I was about 10 or 11 and made my mom take me to it three times.

Also "High Noon" where Randolph Scotts wife was a Quaker and was going to leave him because he promised to give up violence and instead had to face up to evil or be a coward.

Great movies... especially "persuasion". If you haven't seen it, rent it next time you get a chance.
