If your baseline scenario is inaction (so no new laws and no renewing of laws) then extending the tax cuts is in fact reducing revenue as compared to the baseline. Opposing your hypothetical sales tax hike is not reducing revenue when compared to the baseline, as in that scenario the taxes wouldn't change either.
its not "reducing" revenue. This sort of logic would say if the GOP opposed a 50% hike on sales tax that would be reducing revenue as well. makes no sense.
If you want to take the historical situation as your reference scenario, which is an equally valid option, then extending tax cuts isn't reducing revenues though.

Congressmen are members of the legislative branch of government. No one in the executive branch (including the president) has authority over their salaries. Look it up. It's Civics 101.
They want to cap salaries in the private sector, for example.. but on what authority?

It's so tough for you right wing nuts to look at the truth, much easier to be a Fox puppet.

But if you have already spent the money on stimuli and bailouts in anticipation of a tax increase, I guess it might feel like reduced revenue.
Time for the government to live within it's means, eh?

Ok, I can't take it anymore. The Republicans make a campaign promise this last election to knock $100 billion off the deficit.

Report: Russian President Signs Decree to Cut Number of Federal Officials
Published January 03, 2011
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev reportedly signed a decree on Monday reducing the number of federal officials by 20 percent until 2013.
According to the decree by the Kremlin press service, the number of federal officials will be reduced by 5 percent in 2011 and 2012 and by 10 percent in 2013.
The number of federal officials in Russia nearly doubled in the past five years, from roughly 600,000 in 2005 to more than 1.1 million in 2010, RIA Novosti reports.
The move could save up to $1.3 billion from Russia's federal budget, according to the website.
