She remains a very powerful force. She can draw a conservative crowd in a NY minute. The left would not be so adamant in opposing her if they didn't fear her. To be sure, McCain has been wrong more than right, but I think he judged Palin's pluses pretty well. He and his managers were just awful in using Palin's strengths, and in minimizing her weaknesses.

You are saying very much the same as I did. Rove is a pragmatist. Anything to win. That gets you GW Bush, McCain, and Romney. Palin is a person who speaks from the heart, and people in flyover country know it.
I would say that Rove has no soul, nothing to fight for other than power. No belief, no sense of conservatism and now conservatives have now joined their fight against him. He has no future, just further misery and loss which is why the left now stands up to defend him.
Sarah Palin wouldn't make a great leader, but is a very good orator. Well, she's not very good if she has to think on her feet (just look at any interview she's ever done), but she's very good at rallying her own people. As such, she's an asset to the Republican party.
However, as she ages and her looks fade even more, I doubt she'll be useful for much longer.
