I read most of the book several years ago. It's not as astounding as it might seem, especially if you consider limited, but very compelling evidence that a Chinese traveller visited the Americas in the fifth century. If I recall correctly, Hui Shen's account of his travels describes birds then known only in the Americas.
Originally posted by WulebgrThe more I read of the book, the more it is clear that the evidence that the chinese colonised america & different parts of the world has been well know for a couple of hundred years. Yet it seems to have been largely ignored or even in some cases surpressed.
Columbus, Cook, and crew were not the first at anything. But their voyages were more significant than their predecessors because of advertising and promotion--they became trendsetters. They were true proto-capitalists, offering superior marketing, where previously quality determined value.
This entire thread needs a bit of perspective. Have any of you ever went to the "ends of the earth" trying to lose track of the record of man?
I went to the Gobi desert last fall and "wandered" by myself to try and lose track of civilization and all the burden that goes with it.
On the fifth day... alone without food. Down to a Liter of water, I sat down to rest. I stuck my hand down into the sand, squeezing it and feeling it run away from my effort, feeling very humble and transcendent. Then I felt something. I pulled it out of the sand. There in my hand was a ticket to a production of McBeath. From a couple of years ago. It was a ticket to a play; a production of the Utah Shakespeare Festival down in Cedar City.
Do you really want to know the hoot? I was at that performance. Why did that piece of scrap and I meet up in the Gobi?
Can you spell trash? T-R-A-S-H?
Somebody else who thought they were really 'getting away' from it all, just chucked it out into the Gobi. I resurected it and sat stunned at the silliness of life.
Now all I have to do is figure out if that piece of paper has the same meaning as I... and if so? Are we both just trash?
It got there by accident. I spent 20 grand to get there. What kind of justice and message is that? Doesn't seem very fair at all.

Perhaps it something to do with the victorian type of mentality of that era?
Suppressed? Why?
I read about "Chinese Stone Anchors" found in San Francisco harbor in my Weakly Reader in 1953. Why would anyone want to suppress it?
Make the book sell better?
edit for clarification: this happened in california

Did you mention if this is a work of Fiction or Non/Fiction?
That makes a difference as to how you and all of us should be taking this thread.
If it is a work of fiction, then there are no rules or judgements. Well... except if it has good characterizations and manages to entertain.
If it is non-fiction then it is open to research and study and the scientific method.
Anyway, I didn't mean to come down on you if you thought I did. I was just pointing out that I really did read all about this a long time ago.
Cheers.

Originally posted by StarValleyWyDon't worry Mike I didn't think that, plus your point about suppression is very valid. Like I said I might be reading too much into it. To answer your question it is a work of non fiction based on fifteen year of research by a retired submarine commander. I just created the thread because I think it is interesting subject worthy of debate. Part of me wonders why these facts haven't become more mainstream already, as it is clear that it has been know about for a long time. Its been a few years since I was at school, perhaps somebody here knows if these views are being taught in our schools now?

not in mine we learn that in 1492 columbus sailed the ocean blue and discovered North america (even though he never set foot on the actual continent) a fact our teachers have conveinently forgotten kinda like how they did not teach our class that the vikings made it there first and even had a colony up in Nova Scotia
