I took out a racoon last night, almost killed myself trying to avert the catastrophe. How can animals be so stupid as to run out in front of an object bearing down on them at 65 MPH? Thats not natural, there's no natural selection in becoming roadkill, my truck is not a predator. Deer are the worst, but i know they get hypnotized by the lights.
How can they be that stupid? there has to some form of slight intelligence in these animals. Are some animals smart enough not to walk across the highway or are they all retarded?

My raccoons are very smart. They understand roads. They understand chess. How do you think I keep my 1200 rating? Raccoon coaching, that's how.
I bet it was a suicide raccoon, trying to take you out. I have heard the animals in Michigan talking back and forth about ways to take out humans. The deer are very good at it. And the birds are developing a secret biological weapon.

Originally posted by shavixmirAnd in America we have several cookbooks devoted to serious recipes for roadkill. Now that's cheap living, Shav. Well, the books aren't cheap but the meals are.
Roadkill has its seasons just like anything,
There's possums in the autumn and there's farm cats in the spring...

Originally posted by PocketKingsI think it's got something to do with having a 360 degree field of vision. Each eye, situated on the side of the head, has its own independant field of vision. They can see all around them, but lack the necessary depth perception to guage the speed of oncoming objects.

Predators typically have binocular vision, with each eye having an overlapping field of vision, which gives them greater depth perception and the ability to guage the speed of fleeing animals.
That might account for why deer blunder into traffic, but I don't know about the raccoon. Perhaps he was blind in one eye.
Originally posted by PocketKingsI used to live up in the country, and having to avert animals on the road was a huge problem. Most of the time it would just be rabbits or feral cats/dogs, but occaisionally you'd come across kangaroos or cows, which can write off your average sedan no problem.

Sometimes when you're driving along you see a critter on the side of the road in complete safety, when they hear your car coming they'll run across the road, rather than backing away from it. This is because most animals are very stupid and also have serious tunnel vision, so they'll hear an oncoming threat, see the other side of the road, and figure that's their only option. It's just their instincts leading them astray
