I would have preferred that Obama call for balancing the Federal budget rather than more powers to raise the debt ceiling.

The phony debt ceiling is really of no use. Should not even have it, or it be just a formality. Instead, make hard decisions and cut spending/raise revenue for meaningful deficit/debt reduction, and not attempt to use some meaningless mechanism such as the debt ceiling. Sure you can sequestration like we have coming in a few days (and do you remember Gramm-Rudman?), but that has nothing do with the procedural debt ceiling.
