The debt ceiling itself is a sideshow. If Congress doesn't want to increase the level of debt, balance the budget. Passing laws that add to the debt and then periodically having these partisan games regarding the debt ceiling is insane.

Sorry Charlie, but the Democrats only know one way, raise taxes on everyone but themselves and spend every last nickel they can get their grubby little hands on by rammimg programs through Congress or do an end run using Presidential Decree. I've never seen such of group of people so determined to force our country to commit fiscal suicide damning our future generations of children and grandchildren to third world status.

All 50 states except for Vermont have seen the wisdom of some form of measure to ensure/encourage balancing their budgets.

I would have preferred that Obama call for balancing the Federal budget rather than more powers to raise the debt ceiling.

The debt ceiling is phony. If the "ceiling" is raised every time we approach it, of what value is it in deterring runaway spending? It really enables chicken littles.

Raising the debt ceiling is done to pay for past expenditures and obligations, and not for future spending. The debt ceiling really serves no useful purpose. Historically, we never even had a debt ceiling.

The phony debt ceiling is really of no use. Should not even have it, or it be just a formality. Instead, make hard decisions and cut spending/raise revenue for meaningful deficit/debt reduction, and not attempt to use some meaningless mechanism such as the debt ceiling. Sure you can sequestration like we have coming in a few days (and do you remember Gramm-Rudman?), but that has nothing do with the procedural debt ceiling.
