@contenchess saidEvery jurisdiction is different,
@sonhouse
Life is usually 20 years and you get a chance at parole every few years.
Life without parole plus 20 years means the life sentence may be overturned at a later date so they add those extra years just incase that happens.
there are very few, if any, 20 year
murder sentences in The USA, anymore.
@jimm619 saidI was just explaining how the courts work.

It could be 30 or 25 or whatever.
Life sentences get overturned all of the time.
I've met two of them 😉
Many years from now Georgia might have a governor that abolishes all life sentences.
So the extra time on top of the life sentence just makes sure they do enough time if the life sentence is overturned or becomes life with parole.
Georgia is tough on crime so the only one who has a shot at getting an appeal is the guy who recorded the event.
@jimm619 saidThey are screwed then 😄
Keep in mind that they
also have Federal charges.....
The feds don't play around.
(Depends on the charges of course)

@contenchess saidNext month, the McMichaels and Bryan face a second trial, this time in U.S. District Court on federal hate crime charges. A judge has set jury selection to begin Feb. 7. Prosecutors will argue that the three men violated Arbery's civil rights and targeted him because he was Black/

I looked.
Hate crime and attempted kidnapping will be less than the life sentences.
Most judges will run that time with the state charges. So it's just for ceremony.
Going to trial could piss the judge off and he could make the Fed sentence consecutive though.
But...a trial means you get an appeal.
Pleading guilty means no appeal.
@contenchess saidFederal time is easier here, in Canada too?.

If those boys were smart they would do anything to get more Fed time. That way they serve their time there.
(Whoever has the most time on an inmate usually gets the prisoner)
(...or offer to plead guilty and start your time in the Feds so most of it is done there)
Ya the USA Fed Max's have the killing and the riots but it's still better than state time.
Fed time in Canada is like a country club.

23 hours lockdown,
1 hr solitary exercise.
@jimm619 saidSuperMax Feds is for terrorists and high profile crimes/inmates. (These 3 Georgia guys don't qualify for Fed SuperMax)

Max Fed where I was had normal prison operations.
State Max is unknown to me.
I heard it can be 23 and 1.
I really don't know. I never did state time.
All I do know is those boys should do whatever it takes to serve the time in the Feds.
@suzianne saidGregory McMichael, life in prison without parole +20 years
Gregory McMichael, life in prison without parole +20 years
Travis McMichael, life in prison without parole +20 years
William "Roddie" Bryan, life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years
Justice for Ahmaud Arbery at last.
Travis McMichael, life in prison without parole +20 years
Good thing for them they didn't get life in prison without parole +50 years - - they would REALLY be in trouble then! 😏
