@shallow-blue saidUse a semicolon for us and show us how it is used properly.
With the way you jabber and rave, nobody would notice if you substituted your own. The contents would remain the same.
Not all of us are thus handicapped, though – leave us adults our adult punctuation.

A period works just fine. A comma would have worked too.
No need for a semicolon.

@shavixmir saidMy favorite Professor once called punctuation "the spice" by which our written language is flavored.
Obviously, I am in the nay camp; semi-colons are the most beautiful of punctuations.
However, what with the younger generation and their tiktocking, apping and what-not; their complete raping of written English, and adding to this nightmare: the American abuse of spelling, the poor old semi-colon is being brought into doubt!
So much so, that I can’t even pretend to kn ...[text shortened]... ormality?
Perhaps it should just be used, because it is proper?
Let’s hear where you all stand!
The semi-colon; while not exactly pepper, can qualify as a peppercorn: And a well placed colon can give pause as it passes smelly adverbs.
@metal-brain saidWell, no. A comma would not have worked fine; commas cannot be used to join two complete sentences each of which could stand alone. To use a comma thus is ungrammatical; it's one of the errors for which I frequently mark down my students. A full stop / period could work grammatically; the semicolon, however, indicates the close relationship between the two thoughts, as well as helping the reader to judge the flow of the sentence.

@shavixmir saidGood reply. Reminds me of the difference between a literalist and a kleptomaniac:
As for good punctuation: it can save lives!
Let’s eat grandpa.
Let’s eat, grandpa.
a literalist takes things literally, whereas a kleptomaniac takes things, literally.
@teinosuke saidYou can still use a period.

@metal-brain saidYou are wrong on absolutely every single issue you post; stastically you’re wrong on this issue too.
You can still use a period.

@teinosuke saidThis, ^ absolutely. I'm a hobby novelist, and I use them a lot, where a comma or full stop just doesn't cut the mustard; they are essential to proper punctuation.

See?
You could have used a period.
@metal-brain saidYes, you could use a period; however, doing so wouldn't emphasise the connection between the two sentences in the way that joining them into one with a semicolon does.

Shavixmir uses a semicolon; this emphasises the connection between Metal-brain's theories as mentioned in the second half of the sentence and the evaluation of his intelligence in the first half.
@teinosuke saidCertainly not an essential difference. A period worked just fine and no emphasis is needed.

Either way people understand it just fine. A semicolon is not essential.

It is optional.
