They screw up.

I can't sit here and say they're above partisan machinations since they clearly have blindly followed political expediency in the past.
But I also see them as bit players in the scheme of things--- and this is a big-boy role.
Their willingness to yell 'fire!' in the crowded movie house is either completely warranted (most likely, given their wallflower status otherwise), or the most egregious step they've ever taken.
Since they've always been the lap dog and never the lead dog, I'm simply guessing they are not pissing in the wind.
