There really isn't much stuff that excites me. For the most part the hobbies that engage me don't require buying the latest gizmo, or even having a screen in my face. A few video games are an exception. Maybe hanging around on this site occasionally is another exception.
Silicon Valley may think it knows what I want or who I am, but not really. I tend toward being reclusive, and my tastes are too eclectic and changeable.
And then there are the things I do want and go looking for, only to find that it does not exist. A ceiling hook about a centimeter in size that has a little latch on it? Doesn't exist. A plastic tub with dimensions about 1 x 1 x 2 feet with vertical (i.e. non-sloping) sides? Doesn't exist. And the list of casual clothing items that I like that no longer exist goes on and on. "Rumpole of the Bailey" on DVD for less than the cost of a dental implant? Doesn't exist. My latest search was for a simple, idiot-proof device that can determine whether water is electrified before stepping in it came up jokers.
Anyway, the less you consume, the less you are consumed. A beautiful symmetry.
* There are multimeters and simple voltmeters, but they are all geared toward being stuck into electrical sockets and/or require diddling with some odd ground line that has to be stuck in a pot of soil or something. For Christ's sake, if I want to know if an electrical socket is live I just stick a nightlight into it.

When I was doing renovations we had an orange and white device that looked like a large marker and you just put it next to anything and it would light up if their was a current.
It's plastic so it would work for water too.
Voltage tester at Amazon. 😉

For flooded basements, all I can find is the almost insane "back of the hand rule." So, before stepping into the water, you touch it with the back of your hand. If the water is electrified, the muscles will contract and force your hand to retract away from the water. Mind you, you're still taking a high-voltage shock, but it's brief. Using the front of the hand or a finger is more likely to be fatal.
Well, come on, if the muscles of a human hand can tell you if the water is electric through simple contraction, then it should be possible to make a very simple device for $10 that can do the job -- and without needing 30 feet of copper wire to connect to a proper ground.
Hell, I just put on rubber boots and wade in, but stray voltage ain't a nice thing to get intimate with.
These markers you mention: are they any good for detecting stray voltage in a pond? Or can they only tell if current is running through nearby power lines and wires?
EDIT: I looked up voltage testers at Amazon during my searches last month, too, but I think none of them were clear about how to get a proper ground. I confess I gave up the search before it became a whole-day research project.

This guy stuck his ground of an ordinary multimeter ($7 to buy online) into one of the holes in a surge protector that was plugged into the wall (I think). Metal pipes or other metal objects also can be used to ground (e.g. if you’re poking around the inside of your computer tower you’re supposed to touch the metal frame to discharge static electricity). If the pipes go through the water that’s probably not going to work though. A flooded basement may very well require 30 feet of extension cord to reach a grounded outlet or piece of metal that isn’t touching the water.
If you can feel the electricity than your body is probably a good enough ground to make it work so it can’t be that hard. But a purely handheld object could not do it without using your body as the ground which would shock you. You will need some kind of grounding wire to make it work.

I used to change outlets and fixtures while the power was live.
It drove my boss nuts.
If I got shocked it would just feel like vibration in my hands.
He tried it once and got shocked and screamed like he was in the electric chair 🤣
I never messed with anything stronger like 220 or the panel box. No sir. That's a quick way to die.
