I remember this being reported on the radio, but wasn't aware of the case which had inspired the research. From the wikipedia page:
The study was inspired by the case of McArthur Wheeler, a man who robbed two banks after covering his face with lemon juice in the mistaken belief that it would prevent his face from being recorded on surveillance cameras.
According to Wheeler's Wikipedia page he thought that because lemon juice could be used as invisible ink it would prevent him from showing up on cameras. Apparently he had actually tested the set-up, from Wheeler's Wikipedia page:
Wheeler had tested his lemon juice hypothesis prior to proceeding with the robberies. After covering his face with lemon juice, he took a picture of himself using a Polaroid camera. At the time of Wheeler's arrest, he explained to one of the detectives handling his case, Sergeant Wally Long, that his face had failed to appear in the resulting photograph; a seeming confirmation of his theory. Detectives would speculate this result was caused by bad film, incorrect camera operation, or lemon juice in Mr Wheeler's eyes.
If you ask me he'd just pointed the camera the wrong way when he was trying to take the selfie.
