What was in your opinion the most interesting, important, devastating or inspiring event that took place in the year 2004 ?
I saw the eye of 2 out of the 3 that hit here

the fact that the rest of the world already thought they were all thick was just re-established!
seriously his re-election and the subsequent re-election of tony blair in britain sets the agenda for the western powers for the next 4 years. these are worrying times.

Most important in the long run...
There are three new "Electoral Democracies" added to the world this year. Indonesia, Afghanistan and Ukrainia. How many millions of people is that?
In the short term the most important is that the News Media can no longer single-handedly destroy the will of the world in the fight for freedom. Like they did in the Viet Nam war. It is perhaps mildly amusing that Dan Rather.... the second most important person in helping defeat the fight against tyranny in that war was brought down this year. Long live the internet and "alternative" news! It is interesting to have watched and to have known what they (elitist media) did then -- Viet Nam era -- compared to how easy it is to expose them with information.
On my own personal passion... the effort to get the human race off this rock so we can turn it into a giant park -- Great News! Individual persons went to space for the first time WITHOUT GOVERNMENT! It was indeed a great year. Now if we can just figure out how to kill NASA entirely. That will be great! What a waste it is.

I must agree that such revolutionary developments must rank high on the scale of significance.
But do not ignore the arrival of a small number of 64 bit chess engines.

We are more free now than ever. Thanks to rejection of "mindless" liberalism. And adoption of true liberal ideas and philosophies.
You don't need to hate us anymore. The conditioned mindless minions of the world can do that. Oh. I forgot. You always have to be on the "winning" side. Sorry. I forgot your insecure nature.
Can 64 bit chess engines pull ten cars up the slope to snowhomish like the little engine that could? 😞🙄😀
