Sudan, Iraq and Syria demonstrate the catastrophe arising when there is a failed state and the problems require a stable government as the only solution.

Saddam wiped out an entire city of Kurds due to his genocidal tendencies and the UN did nothing.
In that region the only people worth much of anything seem to be the Israelis and Kurds. They alone could live side by side in peace even though they are Muslim and Jew. It is interesting, however, that the UN seems to target or ignore them both.

Saddam was bad - foul. Removing Saddam was always going to be a good idea. Dismantling the entire basis for self government and replacing it with intractable sectarian violence was not entirely a great solution.
Israel and the Kurds have functioning governments. The Kurds use theirs to achieve a measure of self determination albeit in a complex negotiation with the rest of Iraq and with nervous neighbours like Turkey who worry about their own Kurdish population getting similar ideas. The Israelis use theirs to oppress their neighbours and to implement apartheid backed by violence. The Americans fund the Israeli war machine.
