He started as an apprentice electrician and ended up having his own company with 11 trucks (that's how success is measured in certain trades.) Before that he was in the US navy and was trained as a ship's electrician. So he benefited from a government provided education. He also benefited from a booming local economy with lots of new housing being built. And a savvy wife who co-ran the business.
You don't need the degree to be successful, especially if you open your own business.
