What do you call people who rebel against their government?

I'd say subversive is more like a terrorist or spy. Having said that, I believe both of those would be called a traitor.

why is a spy subversive?

they're certainly not subversive to the country they're supplying information to.

They are for the country they are spying on.

To be a traitor, yes that's true.

Some American rebels to compare/contrast to the Founders:

Confederates
Teabaggers
Gangsters

Gangsters: Not rebels, simply criminals. They have no political ideals, they simply want money and power.

Tea Party people are working within the government, therefore they are not rebels.

Confederates (you are talking about the Conferederate states of America right?) were definitely rebels and traitors.

Isn't this just another version of the rather tedious terrorist/freedom fighter paradox?

It is no more of a paradox than who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

People who do not like traitors are people who like the Status Quo.

Didn't you know that tired old ideas are the ones that people find interesting on forums?

Does that mean rebels are never conservatives?
