I smoke tobacco (tried weed, but didn't find it worth the price) and I drink regularly. However, I've never experienced addiction. I imagine that would be bad, perhaps even worse than sobriety, which strikes me as a life with few pleasures. In my experience with smoking and drinking, quality is critical. Commercial cigarettes hold little interest for me, f ...[text shortened]... axed state. Seagram's 7 might do with certain mixers, but Johnnie Walker is excellent straight.

Yes. At a higher-end restaurant in Thailand, you could purchase a 40 ounce bottle of Johnnie Blue for approx. $200 CDN, then take whatever you didn't finish home with you. I didn't buy a bottle but a man who did was generous enough to offer me a glass. Don't tell me that with that online personality you're easy...
Originally posted by darvlayNo I have not. I don't even drink red and black that often. I'm working my way through everything made in Kentucky, while drinking mostly my mainstay--Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

I liked the simplicity of their ad in Cigar Aficionado.

Clinton might have stayed out of a lot of trouble if he'd remembered that little flask in the desk, reputedly left behind by none other than U.S. Grant. At least that Republican knew where to dip his cigar!

I doubt very much if anybody reading this will not know of somebody whose life has been adversly affected by drink or drugs. You only have to take a walk through the park in any town or city.
I've lost good friends because of alcohol and feel very angry about its place in modern life. Its everywhere and its just to easy.
I know its a personal viewpoint but I was hoping more people would come down on the side of sobriety.
Originally posted by shrewI favor sobriety for my ex-wife, and all her relatives, including our two sons. In their family alcoholism runs rampant. I don't care to speculate how much the alcoholism is a consequence of psychological maladaptation, and how much is due to genetics (her favored explanation). But, alcohol messes up many lives.

Indeed, such destruction motivates my stance in favor of the pleasures of drink. I get no pleasure from slamming a half-rack of cheap beer, or drinking a bottle of cheap whiskey. My pleasure is found in moderate consumption of fine drinks--strong coffee, Scotch, bourbon, Guinness.

I have personally tried all three and they each have their own issues when over used. The issues with the two drugs are each obvious and sobriety... well that just makes you boring and uptight - you need to let go sometimes. I believe that all should apply when appropriate. i.e.
Staying in and wanting to chill : weed
Going out and wanting to party : alcohol
Spending time with the kids, going out to lawyers office & other similar situations : sobriety

I worked up country on the Mekong in a town called Nakomphanom
NKP is what we called it and you could get the original nickle bag!
They also served in the morning before the cops arrived, a soup
called Guitio Nam Guncha, thats sort of how it sounds.
That is this great morning soup with noodles and spices and the
Guncha part, well you might guess what that is. What a way
to start a day off! It was so funny, the cops so predictable, you
could count on them not showing up till 9 am so that wonderful
soup flowed till 8:45!
Then there was "Mamason's" a great little hole in the wall
restaurant with the best steaks this side of antarctica! She was a
great cook and you couldn't spend more than 3 bucks if your life
depended on it! Almost as good as the Portuguese place in
Jerusalem. The best times were had at the RamaIV hotel in
Bankok though, jeez what a bang. getting a drop of acid in a coke
then staying up all night to watch the sunrise.... playing chess
where the board kept wiggling around, great fun! wouldn't have
missed it for the world. The aussies were a gas. There was one
retired aussie rock star a regular there, funny as hell. You missd all
the good stuff I think.
