Lot of goodies like...
What's wrong with the Liberal party and Dion? Is the party a waste of space?
Are the PC's a bunch of right wing republican party wannabees as they've been depicted on TV and the media?
Is Jack Layton and the NDP kidding themselves and they'll never win an election?
Is the Green Party ever going to win a seat?

GRANNY.
I've always found Canadian politics to be more civil than here in the US and you'll find indications of that all over. I'm always surprised when I can open up a BC newspaper and read a rational discussion/debate on a religious topic, as opposed to the shrill, polaric hyperbole that's encountered in the US. And here no one actually writes a coherent piece on religious issues, that's left for the editorials where you're either with us or against us (regardless of where you're at). I do kid about Canadians but they have every right to keep the crazy Americans at arm's length.

I was accused of being an american hater today because I was talking about the US too much, even though no one is talking about canadian politcs.
So, here's a thread about the red hot canadian politics. Who wants to start??

I understand Russia and Canada have been having a bit of tension and a teeny bit of an arms race with respect to arctic naval issues. Do you know anything about that?
When I was suggesting Canadian expantion I obvious meant in a south-west direction ;-)
Anybody that have been paying attention in Geography class knows that not only is Greenland the home of Santa Claus, it is also very close to the north pole - so the arctic belongs to Denmark.
Now buzz off all you Canadians and Russians.

The russians took a sub to the north pole and planted a flag on the bottom of the ocean, claiming that because they put their flag there then that meant the whole area belongs to them now....kind of like how the americans put a flag on the moon...
In reality, the issue will be decided in the next few years after extensive mapping of the ocean floor will hopefully determine which country(s) continental shelf(s) extend into the arctic. Canada is thought to have a large portion of its northern shelf extending into the arctic basin as well as the Russians and some of the scandanavians.
The real prize here will be the natural resources that can be extracted from the area once the ice caps begin to melt.
A new "cold war" is emerging.

Um, actually the US tried...twice. We kicked their ass all the way back to their Whitehouse and then burned it to the ground.
Don't try it again.
"We cannot keep Canada if the Americans declare war against us again," Admiral Sir David Milne wrote to a correspondent in 1817.

It is a collection of speeches given by some of our former Prime Ministers from the time of our Confederation (1867) right up until recent times.
I highly recommend the speech given by Pierre Trudeau after terrorists (FLQ) had kidnapped and killed some of our politicians. In it Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act that suspended our Charter of Rights and Freedoms temporarily. It was similar in nature to your Patriot Act.
In it he defends the reasoning for implementing the measures while outlining the need to reinstall the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as soon as possible. You may find a similar yet strikingly different approach to dealing with terrorism on your own soil. The speech was one of the defining moments in Trudeau's career as Prime Minister and came only 2 years into his first years in Office. Very similar to Mr. Bush yet the outcomes were polar opposites.
