Good idea; since private citizens with rifles are sufficient to defend the nation, let's disband the US military. That would save over $700 billion a year - more than enough to provide every American with healthcare, rebuild our aging infrastructure, transition to clean energy sources, pay off all student debt, etc. etc. etc.

With the Second Amendment why does the US even need a nuclear deterrent?
Or an army?
To use against its own sovereign citizens. Duh.

Been tried before - it's not very smart, or practical.
The USA's potential enemies would be delighted.
You cannot stick your head in the sand in the 21st Century, any more than you could in the 20th...
If you are interested in national defense, and, by the way - your way of life, you should avoid isolationism - there's no future in it because you cannot deter bad actors in the global sense.

He isn't arguing for the abolition of the U.S. military, he's mocking the notion that any adversary in a conventional war would be deterred by a few guys with AR-15s on pickup trucks, compared to the threat posed by the highly trained and very well-equipped U.S. military.

You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
It has been declared this attribution is "unsubstantiated and almost certainly bogus, even though it has been repeated thousands of times in various Internet postings. There is no record of the commander in chief of Japan’s wartime fleet ever saying it ...[text shortened]... amoto

You can't find a better reason for the Second Amendment than a made-up quote? Yikes.

The reason nobody wants to invade the US is because it’s full of inbred trailer trash.

Best leave them to murder themselves.
