I wrote German because I know some people would understand it. I also happen to live in a town whose residents celebrate their German heritage with a festival of sorts every year. Otherwise, not so much. I'm more interested in Russian, American Sign Language, and Spanish. Do you know any other languages? Did you take any in school?

Becasue if you don't speak English, America will come to your house and we will cut you.

No I'm monolingual, wishing I wasn't , but you don't learn other languages by wishing! As far as school , I was a clown most of the time and the rest I just slept, once again wishing I hadn't because clowning and sleeping don't get you a good education. I am now paying obsene amounts of money for classes in college that I could have taken in highschool. In case you got lost in that entirely unnecessary explaination, I guess I could have just said No to the "did you take any in school question".🙂

All the cool Hollywood movies look like crap when they're dubbed. At some point listening to Robert De Niro speak fluent German becomes very boring and you may as well join the bandwagon like the rest of the world I suppose.

occasionally, a non-English thread pops up on the General forum. a lot of the posts (but not all, especially initially) are computer translations.

don't recall seeing a non-English thread on Debates.

if you want to learn another language, you might try taking a class in your home country for starters, then go to another country for immersion. i think you learn a lot quicker if you're forced to drop your mother language.

Because sadly most Americans are mono-linguistic. We haven't gotten smart enough to force our children to learn a foreign language in our schools. I'm ashamed of my fellow Americans who don't speak another language.

I said: "Well, it's more convenient if you can understand each other. But I can write in German or Norwegian if you want."

Es ist halt praktischer, wenn man sich verstehen kann. Men jeg kan skrive tysk eller norsk hvis du vil.

I've never heard of a high school not requiring a foreign language to graduate. The problem is that you can "learn" a language in high school but there's often no one to speak it with. I took four years of Spanish but didn't meet anyone who spoke the language until years later. I still haven't met anyone who speaks French or Russian (other languages I took at least a year of). Don't be ashamed because most of us can't afford to travel to a foreign country to practice language skills taught in school.

I got another reason why we should speak English. A billion Indians can't be wrong.
