A Zen violin story? By all means.
It is a story my teacher told me about the great Hungarian violin teacher Leopold Auer (whose students included the likes of Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, and Nathan Milstein).
Once he was instructing a student who was a bit 'rough' with the violin.
She would play then he would say softly "don't scratch".
She would play some more and again he would say a little louder this time "don't scratch".
And again she would play and again he would say even more loudly "don't scratch".
So once more, she plays and finally he says softly again "ahhh, scratch".
