I really don't think we need to obsess over animal/vegetable/mineral, the opening statement is simply a clue to the item or object. For example, I could say "a place of learning" and mean Cambridge or the local kindergarten, or (if I was really trying to trap people) refer to life in general or the govt's education department. The idea is to have a solution which can be found by others asking no more than 20 questions, but to force the asking of as many of those 20 as possible. I was quite happy with my 16, but could have done better if I hadn't added so many clues along the way.
Originally posted by KewpieSo you could bypass the animal, vegetable, mineral classification with respect to Cambridge. That was my original point.

"The most popular variant is called "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral." This is taken from the Linnaean taxonomy of the natural world. In this version, the answerer tells the questioners at the start of the game whether the subject belongs to the animal, vegetable or mineral kingdom. These categories can produce odd technicalities, such as a wooden table being classified as a vegetable (since wood comes from trees), or a belt being both animal and mineral (because its leather comes from the hide of an animal unless it is synthetic, and its buckle is made of metal)."
Happy now Mr nit picky๐ณ
Right: no Animal, Vegetable, Mineral categories, in fact no initial categories at all because none of them work in every case.
