One day I hope to visit America for perhaps a week or two. It will be a budget shoe string trip, but my wife and I hate roughing it too much.
We like bright lights and some excitement night life and ethnic dining etc but hate crowds especially queues.
We love the countryside and scenic beauty.
I love fishing and have heard of big Pike up in Northern NY. ( I get plenty of trout fishing down in NZ.. so something new would be good)
My wife likes the Idea of New Hampshire but because we both left the old one in our childhood I'd like to show the old one first...lol
Slim Jim is a truckie and has been everywhere in the states... He likes El Paso... I fancy that but he also suggests Montana and Idaho
I'd appreciate a few words of what you love about the best places Where would you recommend?

I'd appreciate a few words of what you love about the best places Where would you recommend?
Most motels are pretty good and you can get away with about 40 USD a night if you are not looking for anything to fancy.
On the last two occasions when we have come over we just bought flights and booked a hotel on the net so that we had somewhere to stay the first night. Then we just hired a car and drove of into the sunset with no real idea where we would stop. Just go with the flow and enjoy!

Motelling sounds fine..we use them a lot here.

None of that would stop a trip.. Mates went to middle East at Xmas.. inc Lebanon loved it.
Anyway.. Jazz at Seattle. goes on the list with a trip over to Portland maybe ..

Or in similar fashion you could see Glacier National Park , Yellowstone (stunning) , Flamming Gorge , Dinosaur Nat Monument , and Rocky Mountain Nat Park . The west has fabulous camp grounds that are quite cheap . Some rental companies are leasing out small RVs too , so you wouldn't have to rough it .
How ironic though : I just got done with a similar trip and my girlfriend raved about NZ and how I really need to see it . She'd live there if she could .
I agree with MC about the National Parks great beauty and reasonable rates but if you don't like crowds then it may not be for you. I'm specifically thinking of Yellowstone, which I'll never visit unless I went there in the winter.
Maine is quite beautiful, the fishing is excellent, but the only bright lights you see are when you venture too close to a hurricane lantern.
New Mexico!My home state! The Land of Enchantment has lots of smaller and beautiful parks which are not quite so crowded. There are cabins to rent in National Forests which are quite reasonable.
Good fishing: rainbow trout, catfish and bass.
There is also cultural diversity. A very stong Native American and Hispanic presence with lots of good events an restaurants.
While driving about there are the Pueblo cities, like Acoma and Laguna and Taos. All are open to the public at different times, many allow guests to special celebrations.

Alaska is also magnificent but it is expensive to get to and travel about in....
Stay away from Florida too. I just saw a fly as big as a pigeon! I couldn't leave my car until it flew away as it likely would have carried me away in it's talons! It sneered at me as it flew away as if saying I know where you live and I'm dropping by there tonight. Sleep will be hard to come by...
