I looked at it like this first but then thought that it's not like we are
trying to destroy the other countries or declare superiority but it is
equal considering the amount to Americans vs. Other countries. Also,
it's just in fun and we are not promoting a U.S.- superiority complex....
That's is just my take on things!

Back before Bobby played in the 1972 world championship with
Spassky there was a U.S.S.R vs the Rest of the World Match in which
Bobby actually consented to take second board...giving up first board
to Larsen.

So no...this not about singling anyone out...it is just that Donadoni
might feel that their are more USA players here as a whole than any
other one country. I know...that is very presumptious on his part and I
can see where it would lead to the feelings you have. But I do not
think he meant anything by it. He also mentioned an East vs.
West...which I guess is not quite as controversial.

But how we..if we...set this up is up to everyone...not just a few people.

In that match Larsen didn't fare to well and his Nimzo-Larsen opening
was crushed by Spassky in 17 moves.

An awesome game that showed exactly what a tactician Spassky was.

I think you probably know this game Tony..but if you want I will post
in the Theory forum with commentary and analysis.

Always have to ruin my fun......don't mention the Fischer-Larsen match
either! Larsen was a great attacking player and I'm sure that he got
Spassky a couple times!

I would have to check on that since I do not own a book on Spassky
or Larsen...but I am pretty sure only losses and draws for Larsen.

But yes he was an awesome player...and had every shot at the
title...but yes he ran into that wrecking ball of a 6-0 whitewash named
Fischer.

Sorry..had to get your goat a little.

I remember their first game back in Portoroz 1958 where Bobby
showed everybody how to destroy the Dragon variation.

That was a killer!

Tal had a pretty awesome record against Fischer...in fact in one
tourney he slammed him four straight times and he was standing
outside and someone asked for his autograph and he signed his
name and then Fischer's up under it. When asked why he did that he
replied "Well I have trounced the poor lad for times..I think that gives
me the right to sign his name."

How does that make up for the other things I brought up?

It doesn't! Larsen is a beast! You know, some people say I play like
Larsen myself! Obviously just kidding on that one!

Ahh John (hey..what is with the "Jakob" thing? John Jakob
Jingleheimerschmidt?)

I have been a team captain once..in the match in SC, Rock Hill vs.
Fort Mill...icidently sice it was the Rock Hill Chess Club...Fort Mill got all
the players from Charlotte, Chester, and other adjoining areas. I got
only people in Rock Hill...and by shrewdly putting people where i
thought they would do best...we came out on top..although I must
admit I lost my individual game to the Captain of the other side.

There is a cool book called "Chess For Tigers" that talks about team
play and the corect way to psychlogicaly set up your team so that they
do their best.

So I guess I am a little experienced...but will wait for a consensus
vote on it if we are really going to do this.

I think it would be fun.

The Tourney ideas sond very intreauging, I would suggest finding who
all would be interested then have a few elimitaions to determine the
teams. Ratings do not necessarily indicate ability here due to time
factors and such. I have played in tourneys on IECC, itsyourturn and
playchess but the East vs West or USA vs the rest sound like a fun
idea.
