I wouldn't say there has been more crashes. As a pilot I hear about different crashes every week that the media does not report, It just so happened that had two airlines in a row crash close together that were both in America.
Airlines are safer then ever before!
As for the frequency of aircraft merging in the skies, I don't believe that it's occurring more often recently, but I DO think that the possibility strongly exists if something is not done to relieve the congestion or at least make it more manageable. Hopefully the new GPS navigation system they are considering may help...
