ka3ypl. it's been a long time since I studied code, but I was doing 25 wpm when I was copying on a regular basis
I was active in the Delaware Lehigh Amateur Radio Club (DLARC)
but the car I had the antenna's in went belly up and haven't added
anything to my latest piece of crap car. My company is going
belly up too so I won't be on the road as much now.
I have an Icom 706 MkII G, a great little rig, goes from 160 meters
to 440 MHZ all mode, the size of a CB radio but 100 watts out.
Amazing radio, the front panel comes off and can be velcoed to
the dash and the main box under the seat. Have collins KWM2A
also and have tower ready to go up whenever I get time.

How tall is the tower going to be, are you in an area with zoning regulations on that sort of thing?
have a tower too close to an airport, within 2000 feet or some such
and I am close to a small plane grass port by the Lehigh river,
What is worse is I am up the hill from the airport (Slatington airport)
and would have trouble getting something too high in the air.
Fortunately we have some very tall trees in our yard (next door
actually) pines about 100 feet high so as long as I keep the tower
under that height there should be no problem, the tower is only
70 feet high so it should work out. Physically it is a big job. Have to
dig a cube out of the earth 6 by 6 by 6 and fill that with concrete
and then the base unit to be put into the concrete about 2 feet or
so for base support, then up with ten foot sections at a time
and then at the top a very large beam. Its a pisser of a job but
the signals get about 100 times better with a great deal of
directivity. I already talked to antarctica with a simple wire hanging
out of my third story window to the ground so I should do a lot better
with the tower. We want to arrange a chess game with the guys
who winter over, they were very interested in that project.
Their call is KA3AAA, the antarctic station. So thats that, big job!
Right now have even bigger job, getting ready for winter, have a very
large very old (130 year old) house only partially insulated and heated
with oil, which will undoubtedly go to 3 bucks a gallon before the onset
of winter so that stuff comes before ANYTHING else! You may have
seen my plea for info about alternate heating. Am in desparate
trouble, it may cost $6,000 to heat my house this winter when it
used to cost 2 thou. Probably have to have the house at 40 degrees
and get some kind of electric blanket arrangment for the old folks,
approaching 90 years old, inlaws.
