If everyone who had back pain took your advice, used ice when need, did other gentle excersice with gentle stretches, there would be little need for painkillers. Your advice (ab strengthening) is the first thing to do. You are completely right on about what weak abs do. Think of them as the connecting point between legs and torso - would you want that point weak? Should the two strong ends of your body have a weak middle? No Would it hurt if it was weak? Yes.
