I’m thinking of painting the chimney breast in my lounge in a contrast colour. The walls are pale in Dulux Nutmeg White and I’m thinking Oxford Blue for the chimney breast.

Colour suggestions?

is it popular in the UK to have this made of drywall or moulding? Because in the US this is normally brick or other stone and is hardly ever painted.

Mine is stone with a brick base, and I've never even thought of painting it.

It does vary depending on the age of the property; mine is a mid 50s build and the walls are all smooth plastered.

Edit, including the chimney breast which is about 1.5 mtrs wide.

Here’s a Google pic search. At a quick glance I’d say the third pic along from the left is kind of what I’m thinking of doing.

(Hope the search shuffles the same)

Just tell him you don't know what you're talking about....LOL...

Sounds like an old house to me, most are made with brick, never heard of anyone painting it to be honest with you.

I did and it doesn't look like a fire place from the 50's to me. Maybe it was installed later during renovations?

Do you plan to do it like this, with a contrasting mantlepiece?

If so, I looked up Oxford Blue and it is dark enough. It might be quite good.

I was thinking he must be renovating. Hard to get the whole story from him sometimes. šŸ™‚

So imagine ALL the walls in our house smooth painted plaster in a lighter colour than that in the Pinterest photo and we now want to incorporate some feature colour.

So we have large (for the uk) chimney breast with a wood burner instead of the original traditional open fireplace, and a fake/composite oak beam above. Other than that it’s just plain except for a chunky mirror above.

What I would like to do is paint the chimney breast Oxford blue, similar to that photo. But I’m getting resistance from the missus who thinks it a bit bold and a bit masculine.

Edit.. no we don’t have the traditional fire surround. We took that out as it wasn’t great tbh.
