I like to use the chat function to say things like "DOH!!" and "damnit..." or "nuts, looks like you've got it now." This does not require a response, shows that I'm semi-aware of the drubbing I am receiving, and makes my opponent feel better. Ask Bad Wolf - he's just one of the many who have been made happier by my obvious "three-stooges" blitz chess ethic. Next time, I'm typing "Why I oughtta..." and "Wub wub wub wub" a lot. 😀
Well, without thinking he starts reaching and takes the piece... right as I'm realizing I can now force a mate on him from the position.
If I kept my stupid mouth shut, he would have done some thinking... and probably seen what I saw in a split second.

I don't think I've won a blitz game in a month. Not even on FICS where I always used to be able to at least force people to time out... Nothing I say can possibly cause people to make their own blunders... unless maybe they thought I was bluffing...

Originally posted by st00p1dfac3Well, there is a rule in USCF that you are not to talk outside of saying things like "I adjust" when you want to center a piece. We can casually talk a little, like if we have something cooking for lunch... but I said something that pertained to the game. I consider it a cheap win.

Personally, I think chatting is unnecessary (even rude) while the clock is ticking. Yes, I know chat can be turned off, but does my opponent know I've got it turned off, or does he/she just think I'm a rude bastard? Maybe I don't feel like turning it off.
1. "Hi, good luck."--or s ...[text shortened]... ter the game, provided both parties are willing.
Agree? Disagree?
Let's hear it.
There isn't any real need to make this more complex then it has to be. If your opponent doesn't want to say hi, or gg, or whatever, that's his or her decision. Respect it. Sometimes people just want to play chess. Now on the other side, chatty players just want to have fun. If you don't want to chat, ignore them. Simple as that. If your afraid that they will think you are rude, then that's their problem. Also, you can type "Hi, I don't chat during the game, good luck" before each game starts. Simple solution.
Originally posted by rbmorrisWhy make rules and let each player dictate what they do. If you are worried about someone thinking you are being an ass, don't be one...or don't worry about it. Why not post a sign that says "no chatting" when you are playing?

Originally posted by rbmorrisI agree with everything you said, I tried it here for the first time yesterday, I found the board not as good as yahoo's (but that may be just that I am more familiar with the yahoo board). Hopefully playing here means that there will be no more (or at least far less) bad tempered, rude players who churn out obsentities the minute they go behind, which unfortunately is very common on yahoo.

3. After the game ends, "Thanks for the game." is appropriate.
Also, how is someone disconnecting rather than resigning viewed? My opponent disconnected and left me feeling somewhat violated. You know who you are.
