Flash the message, "Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
99 red balloons go by.

99 red balloons floating in the summer sky
Panic bell ...[text shortened]... r
Just to prove the world was here...
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.
what is the point of this song here.

ps. you have missed out the 2nd last verse.

Kirk you have a point.I am told that it did not start there but worse than you think on an uninhabited island (St Goegia rings a bell)Some whalers left stuff there and noboby thought anything of it.Some salvage guys thought that has been there for years lets have it.So Mrs Thatcher kicked off,and so the Argentines thought why not send a reminder that The Mald is ours.So Mrs Thatcher went to see the Queen and we sent a task force by sea,and The Americans played a role of mediators for the 12 days it took to the task force to get there.A Vulcan bomber came first had to refuel At Assension Island(American owned?).It just bombed the runway at Stanley to stop any reinforcements being flown in.I have been in a Vulcan. It must have been terrifiing when this thing came over.

B.T .W. Mrs Thatcher was known as TINA (there is no alternative).

Pink Floyd-The Final Cut (1983)

"Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert"

brezhnev took afghanistan
begin took beirut
galtieri took the union jack
and maggie over lunch one day
took a cruiser with all hands
apparently to make him give it back

This song refers to the sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano by the British submarine HMS Conquerer during the Falkland Island war, with 393 of the crew of 1093 being lost. Although not all hands were lost as the song implies, the incident was seen as being an unnecessary loss of life, with Britain receiving a lot of bad press.

From what I understand.Britain declared an exclusion zone similar to the no fly area in Iraq. The Belgrano was both outside and sailing away, but She looked a threat. Thanks for pointing out that when we get to it,it is shoot first and ask questions later.

Even If We Fail, the band I manage (how pompous does that sound), have just recorded a cover of Masters of War, having tried but failed to come up with a better anti-war song themselves.

But in the spirit of favourite lyrics, here's a few of mine:

'Every day becomes everyday' - Strangelove

'Transport, motorways and tramlines, starting and then stopping.
Taking off and landing, the emptiest of feelings, sentimental drivel
Clinging onto bottles, when it comes it's so so disappointing
Let down and hanging around, crushed like a bug in the ground' - Radiohead

'Do you realise that everyone you know someday will die
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know your realise that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realise the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round' - Flaming Lips

'Scratch my leg with a rusty nail, sadly it heals
Colour my hair but the dye grows out
I can't seem to stay a fixed ideal' - Manic Street Preachers

OK, sorry I really should stop now,

Rich.

Your assumption that Iraq and terrorism are linked is incorrect.Since sept 11th there has been approx 3000 suspected terrorist arrests worldwide and not one has been an Iraqi.Propoganda linking Iraq and terrorism seems to have worked.
Your point 'about 2 planes going into buckingham palace'(etc)is rather annoying and niave. We in England, and especially in london, have had to live with terrorism for many decades in the form of the IRA,so are well aware of the devasting effects of terrorism.Would you agree to the annihalation of ireland for having terrorists ??? of course not! In fact ,i have only been to USA once,to New York in fact, and was amazed at the support ,both verbal and financial, there was for the IRA.So please dont patronise us anymore about terrorism.

they call it 'friendly fire'...(although it doesnt sound very friendly to me).Whilst we're on the subject, it hasnt escaped my notice that the worst terrorist attack on USA before Sept 11th was in fact perpertrated by an American(re-oaklahoma).but mentioning that 'people in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones'..or perhaps 'the pot calling the kettle black'...is probably wasted. Take care...peter

The Oklahoma City bombing brings up a good point. Let's review.

In the seventies, the financial institutions pushed much propaganda to the farmers in the midwest to take out loans. Most farmers got into the mix, either taking out a loan, an additional loan, or refinancing their existing loans. The agricultural community was booming.

The eighties came, and with it pressure was put on the banks from the Federal Reserve (i.e. the wealthy constituents complainded of the interest rates proportion to the inflation rate). Suddenly, the farmers lost their backing from their creditors and their loans were being called in. Most didn't have the resources to pay back the total amount due (often in the millions) and those that did ofter did so at great cost. Thusly, many farms were foreclosed upon. The seized farms were bought up by large agricultural conglomerates (hooray for the world market), putting further pressure on the remainging farms.

Today, agriculture in the midwest is dead. What few independant farms exist live at the mercy of the corporations. They have only one place to sell thier produce to, and must accept whatever price they offer. People whose family had farmed the same land for generations are displaced.

Many farmers have committed suicide over the loss of their way of life. If you do your research, there are truly horrid accounts of the insanity these events have produced (I reccomment "Harvest of Rage" as a comprehensive book on the subject). This is the background that spawned those that bombed Oklahoma City.

So I ask you: Is not our governments actions much in the cause of our "terrorism"? Even the IRA exists for a reason. It is wrong and it is unexcuseable, but didn't just appear without provocation.

Should we be so concerned with the Middle East? Maybe we should consider helping those inside our borders first. Call me crazy.🙄
