I'm not saying that I disagree with your original sentiment or that I have anyting against any of the top players here (past or present) but:
You are right that just because someone is the best in a certain field should not make them an automatic target for people to be nasty to, but at the same time does someone having a the top ranking position automatically give them the right to be liked and praised by all? It's certainly not true that all top ranked players here have been picked on. It probably is true that being top ranked makes you more likely to be picked on, but this is true of anyone who is a more noticable figure.

I thought Mr Dantes left due to an issue over timeouts, rather than any real or unreal campaign against him? I played him and found hime to be an OK guy, he was more than happy to explain the ideas behind his opening as I had not played against it before.

In terms of comments against him, some people raised exasperated concerns at the capacity of the man to play so many games at a consistant level of excellence, but that was it.

Others on this site have received levels of abuse that could be considered unfair. That said, some of the obvious cases that come to mind could have easily been avoided - i.e. Skeeter, if they had not created such a controversial intoduction into the forums.

If you want to have an idea about bullying and general nastyness at RHP - look back into the first 30 pages or so of the general forum, into the dark old days of people just abusing each other at a very personal level.

There was this guy (xenophobe,I've to mention,I was shocked by his posts) who was going mad at everyone in everythread everytime.

Yeah, maybe. but just because someone is good at something, doesnt mean theyre exempt from out respect. "Hey see that guy, hes the best....lets pick on him" thats basically what you are saying. Dantes maybe could have spoke up for himself, but when you've walked in his shoes and felt how he felt, maybe you would have done the same thing. lets try to be a little bit more objective here.
Exactly .. so how do you "know" how Ed Dantes felt and was hurt???? Thats an not so very objective assumption.

lets just say it was told to me by someone in his circle. i dont mean he went and cried to his mummy, not in the least, but if people were always having something to say about everything i do and making their donations from peanut galleries everywhere, id be a lil peeved myself.

This is in the first place a chess site.
People who participate come from all over the world. Many of them do not speak english (for some of us difficult to comprehend) or have other reasons why they do not participate in the forums.
It is dubious when chessplayers become a hot topic without their knowing.
Not so strange, that they feel cheated, when they find out.

very well put.

even if the person's feelings aren't hurt, there is a TOS that clearly forbids behaviour such as this be it racist, sexist etc:

You agree to not use the Service to:

Post, email or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

claretnblue, that was noble of you to offer yourself as the receptor of venom - reminds me actually of the great god Shiva (http://www.redhotpawn.com/board/showthread.php?id=9936) who drank the ultimate venom to protect others - but

we have the TOS and we have excellent moderators who do a great job.

and most important we have people like zakkwylder and yourself who speak out against this sort of behaviour.

in friendship,
prad
