@ghost-of-a-duke saidwe made the chess men out of the kids Lego and Chris coloured in a square of cardboard(not even sure if white was playin as black or what.
Or heaven forbid, Monopoly.
@badradger saidMy dad taught me when I was about 8, then I went back to dolls and piano lessons. He was always asking me for a game, I now wish I'd played him more. Once I got on the internet, I started playing again, places like It's Your Turn, Caissa's Web, and Stan's Net Chess.
When did you learn this noble game?
& who taught you?
@ghost-of-a-duke saidDid you let him win? Always good to let the client win! 🙂
First played at primary school, then not again for 20 years.
Had a client who played chess, so rediscovered the game to form a connection.

I was 12 at a sleepover. My friend brought out a set, taught me the moves and rules, beat me 2 games. When I was 21 I got a set for my bd, I had some friends that knew how to play. I lost probably the first 100 games. I read a couple of books and beat them. They wouldn't play me anymore.. I found the city chess club. Played the local champ and sacrificed 2 rooks and mated him. We became friends. I got free lessons for 40 years. My friend is now a professional chess coach and player, . He's 2000

@very-rusty saidNot fussed, but better in the Chamber. (It relates after all to the club ladder).

@suzianne saidchris bought me a nice Staunton chess set/then I got a chess computer....lent that to a mate....never got it back, joined a chess club played for 10 years then it closed down so internet chess saved the day.

@ghost-of-a-duke saidOk, Just that it is a very interesting game, perhaps one of the most interesting I've seen in some time.

@ghost-of-a-duke saidIn 1992 I was working in the Far East. We had some Croatians doing menial tasks. This was during the war between Croatia and Serbia. I got chatting to one of them who spoke good English and he asked me if I played chess. Yes I said and he produced a chess set and we sat down & played. I wasn't really concentrating and he hammered me. A few of the workers had gathered round to watch at this point. Right I said, my turn to play white. I concentrated like hell for this game and he hammered me again. I've had enough I said your too strong for me. He smiled and got up and went back to work. One of his pals came over and told me not to feel bad as he used to play for Yugoslavia before the civil war. What a waste.
Didn't need to, he crushed me.
Learned as a child but put it down mostly until college - the Bobby Fischer era.
I have played OTB of course, but it was too monopolistic in time, so I played for a local chess team (city)
and that and my college games were all I did until I got into correspondence chess, which I loved.
Got married and kids came on board, so I quit the correspondence chess to put all my concentration into family.
Now they are grown, so here I am to play chess for *enjoyment* only. No more studying.
