how can you wish for snow? Lots of snow is horrible. You have to dig your car out in the freezing cold, it probably won't start, then the roads are basically untravelable until they plough, urgh! And then it just sits there for months at a time, turning into an ice bank which is no good for anyone!

at least, this is what happens in New England πŸ˜‰

I don't know, I'm from Birmingham, and very very used to the rain all year round thing! It's not that bad in England you know - over here the fall only lasts about 3 weeks, the summer's too hot for my wimpy English skin and the winter lasts 6 months... sometimes I seriously consider trading back to the damp and rainy skies of the midlands!

I remember going into the mountains at about 9000 ft. elevation in Star Valley in January with my father and uncle in 1955. I was eight years old at the time. We began the day by starting a fire (in a three scoop shovel's full of #7 slack coal and a quart of gasoline) under the truck an hour before we were to leave. This was to "thaw out" the oil in the pan and engine.

When we arrived at the logging camp, we tried to fill the HD5 with diesel fuel. It was frozen solid. Wouldn't run out of the five gallon cans. So we heated it on a fire made of pine bough's. The tractor was wrapped with a tarp and had three "scoop shovel" fires going under the tarp.

It was my job to watch and make sure that the coal didn't go out. If it did, i would slide the scoop out and add more gasoline and/or coal then slide it back under the cat's engine.

The two men were off cutting tree's and logging them up. Then around noon, they would come back and fire up the cat and drag our logs to the loading ramp. We would cant hook them onto the truck bed, secure with chains and binders and make our way out of the forest as the sun set, usually about 6 PM.

I don't know how cold it is before diesel fuel stops running, but pretty darned cold. Cold enough that you didn't leave the fire or the truck cab without covering ALL SKIN with protective cloth or your hands.

The average high temperature in Afton Wyoming in January is -30 F. The national weather service doesn't keep a station there because of it's unique location. Surrounded by mountains to ten thousand feet on all sides, it tends to "invert" and you get way out of bounds temperatures. Head bolt heaters are standard on every car. You buy the car, you have the heater installed the next day.

Brrrr.... Glad I'm not there any more. At least in winter. Balmy 18 degrees here today.

Oh, for what it's worth... That one load of logs would net about 16 dollars. Enough to keep two families... 14 souls... alive and eating.

<Grin> I liked the "Exploding" monitor thingy. "More Dangerous" than a flaming can of gas!

I can't believe that we got away with that stuff... but we were "shown and taught" what throwing gasoline on fires involved. Believe it or not, an eight year old tends to get real focused when you see what it does as part of a safety lecture. There are two Star Valley kids my age still roaming the world who are "disfigured" beyond belief from gasoline burns to the face. That is the only part of the body not completely covered.

Warning. Do not under any circumstance throw gasoline into a fire... even if you see no flames. It tends to "flash" back up the pouring line and causes one to self immolate. (That is "self-destruct by burning" for those who skipped English class on occasion.)

That said. Kids in poverty stricken areas of the world are often forced to face much worse. I know that.

How you doin'? I'm in a better mood this week. Don't know why. Just had a better week than last.

Sorry about that incident last week. I'm not doing too bad; you?

I've never thrown gasoline on a fire, but I mixed up a small Molotov cocktail in my garage (separate from the house...an old shack filled with firewood) when I was 13. Thankfully I lost no skin.

Self-immolation...my aunt teaches anthropology at Hampshire college and once had a student do a paper on this, except he spelled it 'self-emulation' the whole way through. I told her to give him an A if it was a good paper and just write ''This is not metaphysics'' on it...

Can one do a cast upon oneself? To the point of almost becoming that person? I Think Not! 😠

Good on you. I have one most wonderful dream... not to self emulate.πŸ˜›

That 'incident' was because i was too down to argue or express an opinion. My fault altogether.

What were you planning on bombing? Or dare I ask. Warning! mention of Federal Stupidity at this point is not a good ider'!πŸ˜²πŸ™„πŸ˜΅

I wasn't planning on bombing anything...for all my talk, I'm just a talker. But any self-respecting 13-year-old is something of a pyromaniac πŸ˜›.

Doh! :'(

Well, at least I can rejoice in the fact that my car started tonight after the temperature rose a dozen degrees.
