hektographie sounds more like what I remember. but it looks they stopped using them already in the 50's?

I remember a guy being locked in to a closet and 'grafoil' (or whatever it was) poured on the floor. I think it was on the 3rd grade. he was definitely high when he got out. I doubt simple fumes from the spirit as a solvent would do that?

It puts the lotion on it's skin.

It does this whenever it's told.

I used to stand in the coal shed for ages just inhaling when i was little. I still love the smell of coal now. I like the smell of my ex's armpits too 🙁

Oh, I like the smell of moth balls too.

[Heeheehee...you said "moth balls", Beavis]
oh yea, moth balls! the old folks and attics used to smell like it. I guess they were still accustomed to using them.

maybe that's why they got so old?

In the German Wikipedia article, it says that they were used until the mid 80's in West German schools. (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hektographie)

When my son was a baby, I used to settle him down to sleep with the sweater I had been wearing. I would alternate between two sweaters so there was always the warm one for him to sleep with. Having that gave him comfort and reassurance, it's something my family have always done with their babies and it works. It's an animal thing. 🙂

Yep, they remind me of old people...exactly!

I don't like the smell of old people though. (There is definitely an "old people" smell.)

okay, then that's probably what it was here as well I think. I seem to remember it getting banned because the ink was toxic?

Quite possible. The Wikipedia article only says that they were replaced by copy machines that had become affordable by then.

As a kid, I was fascinated by the smell of those copies used at that time - I don't know what they are called, but they were in blue ink on a special paper with a strong smell. I also liked the smell of plastic files. These smells bring me back to childhood.
Mimeographs I think.

Apparently that's similar, but not identical.
