does it matter?
I stated in the opening that they would have flown the same amount of time in the same aircraft.
Basically what I'm asking is:
Who's the better pilot?
I'm of the feeling that if they were in an earlier plane Red Barron would have the advantage... but given equal experience as you have done leaves it a coin toss.
or
Yes, it matters... but not if they are equally trained in the aircraft.

Hypothetical question:
Who would win in a dog fight between Chuck Yeager (WWII Ace; 17 kills) and the Red Baron (WWI Ace; 80 kills)?
Assume that they are both flying the same aircraft, and have had the same amount of flying time in the said aircraft. Also, assume that they took off from the same runway in opposite directions at the same time, leaving the pilots skill the only factor.

It seems to me that Yeager and the Baron are about equal as far as knowledge of maneuvers and dog fight strategy. However Yeager probably had better eyesight, since his vision was about twice as good as a normal persons, and in a dog fight that is no small advantage. Also for several years, Yeager was a test pilot at Edwards Air Base. After flying hundreds of aircraft for no more than three flights apiece, he could probably adapt better than the Baron to whatever new and neverbefore seen aircraft they were flying.
