You confine the dog to a crate that is just big enough for him to lay down in. The idea is you want the space to be so small that he can not pee or poop in one corner and then lay in another. Similarly, you can use empty boxes to block off a larger crate so you don't have to buy a separate one for a puppy and grown dog.
You keep the dog in the crate over ...[text shortened]... e there are plenty of good on line resources. My dog is now trained so I've forgotten a lot.
Originally posted by Pawn QweenWell his initial traing went perfect. This is a problem he has developed in the last week or so. He goes on two walks a day of over a mile each time. I'm not a huge fan of the crate method, but it does work. The problem is he isn't going when I let him out for the finale at night. The place he picked in the basement is troublesome. I do control his food intake i.e. no food after 7pm. The crate isn't done as punishment it is to control his access to the house while I sleep. He dosn't mind the crate there is no anxity about being in there. The method I used when he first moved in was to let him out frequently and give positive reinforcement which worked very well and fast.

Originally posted by bambeeI bed to differ. Dogs spend a large amount of time sleeping...this is what they do. We primarily did this at night. In fact, most days, my wife took our dog to work as he was groing up (as this was allowed where she worked).

I agree, dogs need to be exercised at least once a day. My dog is not the one urinating in our house. I merely explained to someone what "crate training" is.
