There are "cosmic catastrophe" there have been, for example the dinosaurs extinction, the forming of the moon when a massive meteorite hit the earth billions of years ago that would of destroyed everything like a reset button where everything changed. Extinctions are a common occurrence you make it sound like nothing has ever died when over 99.9% of species that have ever existed are now extinct.
Also reading the artical again it says "at most one habitable planet is wiped out every 1.1 billion years" how many habitable planets do you think there are?

or 'one habitable planet in the universe'.
If its one in the universe then your implication is correct, we would
therefore have one in maybe a trillion chance of getting cracked in
pieces in a billion years. Not sure which volume they are talking about.

In the sci-fi novel "The Forge of God" by Greg Bear (1987), the Earth is annihilated by aliens in a very interesting and unique way. It's a good read, and I won't spoil the details for those of you who might be interested in finding a copy and reading it. If you do, don't forget the sequel "Anvil of Stars" (1992). Although I just started on the sequel, it already seems not quite as good as the first.
