Mike, the caveat about first jobs not paying well, while true, makes some interesting assumptions about what these high school kids' real aims are (par example).
That is far less of an answer than your post deserves. I'll be back momentarily.
So, if we make no assumptions, then we must say that it was a declaration of fact with the hope that the listener will realize that the point is that "until you earn status ... you have none. Set your own definition of status, but the principle is the same for money, power, influence, fame, party rank or whatever."
Originally posted by royalchickenYou are right. There might be some who don't desire to be recognized for their accomplishments. As a senior in highschool, i was one of them. I just think that he probably was setting there and asked himself... "let's see. High school. What will they be interested in? Hmmm. I'm the richest man in the world. Maybe a bit about what to expect coming out of high school as far as money is concerned. I'll tell them just what happened to me. That ought to do it."...
Yes, but Mr. Gates' advice still presupposes that status is desired universally if it is to be taken as advice.
( ETHICAL DILEMA.. here is another good thread you've gotten me into Ollie! Think we dare highjack another?)
Yeah, I know. I should give him the benefit of the doubt, and your 'analysis' there brings up a point of view that I too often neglect.
Sorry Bill.
Not that sorry 😉.
Hey Mike, I'm up for a threadjacking, what do you think?
Who is this Ollie? Is it kind of like the imaginary Mike of another thread?
Originally posted by royalchickenBetter not. Poor billwesthoff! Sorry. I really did like the post. Didn't mean to go on a rant. It's like that time I marched in the big protest. Got all carried away and ended up in deep doo-doo... I had no clue that the march was sponsered by the "Help Stamp Out Quick-Sand" club. I thought that when they said "Meet at noon by the swamp!" that it would involve just waving plackards and stuff. But NOoooooo! Off we go right into the blasted stuff! Stamping, stomping! What a mess...
Hey Mike, I'm up for a threadjacking, what do you think?[/b]

There are rumors to the effect that he is planning a big take over of Colorado City. That's a big polygamist town that straddles the Utah,Arizona border... makes for easy exits. I don't really know how many kids, but i'm betting that it would not be a fun job to be one of them. Of all the "relatively" wealthy people I know, their kids get less handed to them than my kids got by far. I have a friend who is rich enough to own several wwII fighter airplanes. His kids worked after school for gas money at "Pizza Hut" in Rexburg. He gave them not a penny for their college. The youngest is a Junior in high school, one is a senior at BYU and the other 3 are all college grads, married and doing well.😲

I have more respect for the doctor who spends years working with AIDS patients in Africa for no money, than the Vice President of any Corporation (Enron, Worldcom spring to mind!)- who would you rather have as your childrens role model?
I agree with every one of Bill Gate’s statements, and feel the overall message is very positive. Take rule 6. Learning from your mistakes is one of the most positive goals you can have (it’s also the best method for improving your chess). Don’t blame others, or bury your head in the sand. Do something about it.
Of course life isn’t fair, and most people’ ...[text shortened]... fail, fail and fail again. What does it matter? The important thing is to keep trying.

See the thread "interesting". It's enough to make some people START.
