But that's the very point of the vacation flag - to show the opponent that the reason why you are not moving is not because you want to avoid or unnecessarily prolong the game, but because you are, temporarily not able to move. Timing out someone in such a situation is, while not technically cheating, the RHP equivalent of kicking someone who' ...[text shortened]... would also see a policy of timing out vacationers as reason to turn down challenges.

But the vacation flag can be abused also. I think the flag should be abolished completely as it can cause much confusion and ill feeling (such as this)

Me! Sad!?
My opinion is not unjust. It's fairly clear. Also ask any0ne else on these forums and they will tell you you are a cheat.ðŸ˜
First to CFC: hanging out the vacation shingle does not protect you from T/O's as is set out in ALL the tourney rules. Trewr01 is NOT cheating but just playing hard within the rules. I know it smarts when you get smacked with a T/O but build a bridge and get over it.
What do I know? check this; jcandance timed me two moves into the epsilon tourney because I missed the prompt and the reminder.
Pissed-yes : bitter-absolutely and so PM'ed him a serve to that effect.
The reply was cordial, truthfull and on reflection his proper position after he had researched my playing history. Play by the sword and then you will die by the sword .
We all are individuals and we all have different pressures that affect our behaviour, some of that manifest's itself within this site and some of it manifest's itself elsewhere.
What I do know is that this is simply the best chess site for turn-based play- period, and I have seen them all.
To trewr01; take the win and the points and know that they have been obtained by fair and hard play but also know this; every other player on RHP is now aware of your attitude to the vacation icon so I hope for yoursake you are able to plan your holidays around tourneys.

soz CFC, but technically they aren't cheats as the time outs are rules and you didn;t move in that time therefore they have every right to time you out!

If I'm not there to move and do not have internet access for that period of time then it may not be cheating but it certainly is unlawful and showing you do not care for others.
Originally posted by trewr01The possibility of abuse is no grounds for taking out the feature - there's hardly anything in any area of human experience that cannot concievably be abused in some way. The Internet is abused, would that be reason to shut it down? The legal system can be abused, should we therefore live in a lawless society? Surely not.
Of Course Pyrrho,
But the vacation flag can be abused also. I think the flag should be abolished completely as it can cause much confusion and ill feeling (such as this)
Besides, I don't think that the vacation flag is particularly inviting or open to abuse - the benefit you could possibly get from putting up your vacation flag just to avoid a game would be negligible, non-existent most of the time, and you would very soon be found out.
The slight possibility of abuse is no reason to ignore the flag, and thus take unsporting wins from legitimate vacationers who form the majority of people using the flag. If you truly are worried about abuse, then what's the harm in waiting and observing the actions of the vacationer? Where's the hurry? If he keeps the flag up for weeks on end, while regularly taking it down to make moves in games other than yours, then you have grounds for suspecting abuse. There's no reason whatsoever to adopt the "shoot first ask questions later" approach.
We all have lives outside of RHP, and occasionally we do take vacations. I think it's only reasonable that we shouldn't have to pay for our time off by taking a dive in our ratings.

Hanging out the vacation flag does not protect you in tounaments, think we all know that. This was a clan game, what's the rush with it.
The vacation flag appears to be an integral part of RHP, ignoring it is not only against the sites principles, but pretty poor behaviour on the part of the individuals who do it.
On a lighter note, CFC will still kick your butt in the challenge, even though you've got the two easy points 😛
Originally posted by trewr01When the clans were set up it was agreed that time out wins would not be taken if the vacation setting was activated. True, there are a lot more clans these days, but the underlying principles of clan play were agreed at the start and should be agreed by all clan leaders.
On a more serious note.
I would expect to be timed out regardless of flags as it is an integral rule of the game to prevent endless games.
As such, I believe do unto others and all that................
Why? The main reason is that individual players are not responsible for starting the games, if I am on vacation and my clan leader starts 10 challenges without my knowledge it is hardly fair that I should loose 20 games on the time out rule.
Also, clans are about community not competition per se. Please respect the vacation setting or do not become part of the clans. Personally, if someone times me out with my vacation setting activated in a clan game I would message the clan leader for explanation and suggest that the player be removed from their clan for be unsporting and being a poor reflection to others.
Tournament games are fine, and the time outs are automatic to reflect this. Personal games is up to your discreton. But clan games, respect peoples right to have a holiday!!!

Just a final word on this thread.
I have spoken to various clan leaders and in light of there response it is apparent that what I have done wghilst not strictly "cheating" is still against the basic principals of the clan games.
As a result I would like to apologise unconditionally to CFC for my conduct and vow it will never happen again
Thank You and Goodbye😳
