I just followed my own advice, and it was an ugly experience.
I checked a couple of sites, and they did have avatars, but there was also an unrelenting bombardment of pop-ups and various other junk that was a constant distraction, so be forwarned, and good luck.
Maybe someone else can point out some "better" sites that have free avatars to offer without all the garbage.

ok, i found one and saved it on my hard drive...now how do i actually link it here?...(I am really inept with computers if that hasn't yet become apparent!🙂)
Some of the members here may be able to host it for you as well, in which case you will need to send the graphic to them at their email address. Once they get it loaded up, they will send you the correct URL to use.

Make sure it is the right size...50 pixels x 50 pixels. The size can be changed in the program, Paint. I went to www.imageshack.us and they hosted it. I copied the url and then pasted that into the spot on the my forum page. It took just a moment...however, it took 3 days to get the paint and pixel stuff worked out.
