I must say I'd never heard of him before his death. I loved the Madchester scene, as someone who is 37 now (so 19 in '89) , and didn't have a tolerance for acid house - the Roses were the euphoric counter balance to The Smiths and Billy Bragg's melacohny.
From the biograpies he sounds as the Inspirals might say "Cool As ...."
