It does matter. Maybe not to the extent that you're suggesting, but user experience is very important in deciding whether to use a program or not. I get what I need from winrar and it doesn't make me feel like my computer is working in the windows 3.1 era.

I'll admit it's been a while. Maybe it doesn't hold for 8zip anymore, but it's still a valid consideration that a GUI be welcoming and create a good user impression.

I mostly use 7zip from the context menu in Explorer.

I very rarely have to use the GUI (having said that, the last version of winrar I had fits your description of 7zip in being Win3.1 looking).
