Some people swear by them, but I've seen quite expensive printers ruined by them. They make a mess, there is no quality control and I've heard (unconfirmed) reports of all kinds of horrible and harmful chemicals used in these 'refill kits'.

This 'advancement' is a headache, but they can't make money off cartridges alone.
So far I have used 3 out of the 6 ink carts in my 3310 all in one photosmart HP, one however, was bad, it also leaked, not enough to get into the works but it definitely was not working, the printer reported it as either missing or bad, so that one was out. The main message of the refill kit was not to let the individual carts empty out. Not sure why that is, maybe because ink would dry up on the print holes but so far so good. One thing I am not sure of is the HP uses the extreme long life ink, 'vivera' and the refill paks claims to use the same but of course with 100 year long ink in the original, if the refill paks started to fade in 30 years or something, you would of course have no recourse since it would be unlikely that refill company would still be in business and for that matter HP might not even be in business so you are left with just taking the refill company's word or not. Even if HP is still in business 30 years from now, I would bet Vivera ink would not be still for sale in that time frame, nothing is around that long, technology advances too fast for that. 30 years from now paper might not even be available or made illegal to satisfy the tree huggers🙂
