Might I try to suggest a different approach to the subject of moderation?
There are various sorts of humour, for example:
Character based: You build up a character and place him in unusual situations.
Satirical: Making fun of someone elses statements
etc.
One of the easiest forms of humour though, is shocking people.
Imagine my post on best ...[text shortened]... e longer the list of banned things, the more things there are to poke fun at!
Enjoy yourself!

we all know the post about beastality, correct? all those who wanted to read it have read it, correct? now, what's the big fuss about? it's not as if it was immediatly deleted, was it? however, it had beastality in the title, and not only is there self-moderation by not posting unsuitable things, but there is also the not-readinig of them. i, for one, didn't read the thread. i have no idea what it was about, apart from beastility. but it was also, surely, titled that way to provoke people. to meerly provoke an intrest, perhaps, but it also provoked people to click the moderation button also. it sorta brought down the standards of the forum to the casual observer, IMO.
(i didn't click the mod button, btw...also-what's the URL of the forum wars place?...😛)
EDIT: also, i haven't actually noticed any posts that have been deleted...

If you aren't happy with the way these forums are run, don't use them.

1. Site owners like us to use their site, idiot
2. They want to hear suggestions on how to improve.
3. Idiot posts like that are blatantly rude, and show how ignorant the poster is.
Angie voiced her opinion, stop being jerks about it.

2. They do want to hear suggestions on how to improve the site. There is a "site ideas" forum for this purpose. But there is a huge difference between complaining and offering constructive ideas on what would make a better site.
3. Well, you are absolutely right on this point...read it a few times and think about it.

To say it so you all understand, asking someone to just leave instead of voicing their opinions is the wrong way to deal with problems.

To calrify, so that YOU may possibly understand, I didn't tell anyone to leave. I said that if you don't like the way the forums are run, don't use them. If the forums aren't used by a majority of people, then there is a problem. If most people are enjoying the forums, then things would appear to be running just fine. I'm sure that the majority of the paying members are content with the way things are running here, and most know how to properly address a suggestion for improvement if they feel it is needed. And before you reply to that, yes there is a difference between paying members and non-paying members. Non-paying members are certainly an important part of this community, and they are welcomed by most of us, but they really do not contribute to the viablity of the site. It is true that they are the pool of candidates to be paying members, and are encouraged to subscribe, but you cannot cater the site policies to appease poeple who are just here for a free ride. There are free sites where you can say whatever you wish. There are posts in this thread about the forumwars site. If you want un-moderated forums, go there. I hear it's quite interesting, but I don't go there (taking my own advice) because that isn't what I want. It's rather arrogant of you to presume that people whose opinions differ from yours are simply "ignorant". That would be the truest example of ignorance that I have come accross in some time.
I have to make a post here because I've been through this stuff when I was the sysop for the Arrakis BBS...
I want to say that in spite of all the rhetoric about mods taking control and deleting posts, all members who paid for a subscription have to be represented by the site. Why? Because they are PAYING members. Hence, the site MUST protect the people who are willing to PAY for the privilege of membership.
Soooo, all the people who complain about the mod team should realize that the mod team selected is only there to PROTECT the majority of users!
Go off on me if you want.. I don't care. The fact of the matter is that if any website doesn't LISTEN to their PAYING MEMBERS then they will soon perish.
I want to state that the mod people are doing what they feel is necessary to maintain a good website by International standards!
It's okay to disagree... but
* When people start attacking other paying members then it's time to take a serious look at removing those people.
* When the forums become out of control because os a very few ignorant people, it's time to shut the forums down or REMOVE the people who are the problem.
I'm an established writer, and as such I am frequently asked to write an article about the best/worst chess sites. My next article will most likely contain the message that RHP is a good site because they protect their paying members.
