I say Gates by 1.7 km. That is on a standard day at sea level with a temp of 70F (21C).

Interestingly 3 Steve Job style replies, “Because I say so” but with 2 opting for Bill Gates.

In this world, whoever dies with the most toys and lives the longest wins.

Gates wins.

It is a very difficult question to answer. We would need criteria about "contribution to industry"

Both men really did a lot in terms of marketing the computer as a machine for individuals.
Jobs certainly fed the vanity of his customers.
Gates certainly tricked a lot for personal gain (via the best of Microsoft).
Gates made more money, so if we take that as criterion he won.
Jobs brought a nearly lost company back into making BIG $$$.

Both were not the geniuses behind the systems. So I count Steve Wosniak higher in terms of technology development than either.

The best you can say about Steve Jobs is that at least he wasn't as big a pirate and profiteer as Bill Gates still is. The damage Gates has done to the computer world in general and on-line safety in particular is impossible to overstate.

Would you like to explain how you have become locked in this perception?

I wasn’t asking who “won” anything nor for projections across different multiverses.

I wonder if the world would be a better place without either of their impacts on it.

Indeed, what are the criteria, but also if not them then somebody else?

We no longer live in a world where one genius makes a
difference, that was a hundred yeras ago. Or perhaps 400.

Not if you put it like that, no.

Bur I do this stuff for a living, and having to deal with the brokenness of Gatesware on a daily basis is exasperating.
