@drewnogal saidChecked out your gender difference observation. I would accept we need more data from other posters, but my wife also has three odd socks. In fairness it does also sound like you are describing two odd socks cohabiting.
I have a big polythene bag-full shoved under my bed. They are mainly mens sports socks; ladies socks never wander you know. At desperate times I grab two who look somewhat alike. They seem to stick together for life after that and never stray.
@ponderable saidMr Pond, you are a man of science. A work of fiction is no basis for a null hypothesis. Focus.
[hidden]Saw that Suzianne beat me to it...any way: With the fourth draw you can be sure to have a matching pair.[/hidden]
As people probably know Zaphod Beeblebrox became mighty rich by discovering the planet where the lone socks go (and the erasers by the way) He made his fortune by selling those seocnd hand...
@petewxyz saidA believe most are observing social distancing.
Where are all the socks?
Please confirm the locations of any sightings. There out there somewhere.
@wolfgang59 saidFor unwashed socks, that's "instinktual".

@wolfe63 saidYou touch an important issue. The lack of need for deodorants since social distancing could result in major cultural shifts in personal hygiene.

A reduction in the rate of sock washing could allow a cunning experimental design. Did the rate of disappearances alter at the start of lockdown?

@ghost-of-a-duke saidOpposite end of the spectrum. I have socks older than you π
I only wear a pair of socks once. (They are then donated to vegetarians).
