I saw the evening news tonight and what was the first thing I thought of after seeing that report? The last time I ate meat? Will I get mad cow? No, it was Prad! Actually, it was in a cow not far from Vancouver. Oh yea, I had a spinach salad for dinner. πŸ™‚ Kirk

Good for you.

The amazing thing after all these years people will continue to eat it despite the mad cow disease.

Then again people still drink and drive.

the usda has banned the slaughter of downed cattle!!

"downers" are animals so badly diseased or injured that they cannot even walk. the meat and dairy industries deal in "downers" because they can still sell them for human consumption. downed animals commonly lie in alleyways, without food, water or veterinary care, until it's convenient to take them to slaughter and are typically moved by the easiest, but least humane ways such as being dragged with chains or pushed with tractors or forklifts, practices that cause injuries ranging from bruises and abrasions to torn ligaments and broken bones.

animal protection groups have been pushing for an end to this for 17 years. it has finally happened no doubt prompted by the recent and very real threat of mad cow disease.

here is the link to the usda announcement made today:
VENEMAN ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL PROTECTION MEASURES TO GUARD AGAINST BSE
(http://www.usda.gov/news/releases/2003/12/0449.htm)

below are 2 announcements from farm sanctuary (www.farmsanctuary.org) and from the us humane society (http://www.humanelines.org/) regarding these proceedings.

=================
USDA BANS THE SLAUGHTER OF DOWNED CATTLE!

At a press conference today in Washington, DC, Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman announced, Effective immediately, USDA will ban all downer cattle from the human food chain.

This ban on the slaughter of downed cattle is part of a government effort to quell public concerns in light of the recent discovery of mad cow disease in the United States. It is a historic victory for animal protection advocates who have worked to end the inhumane marketing and slaughter of downed animals since the 1980's.

Many details are yet to be determined, but this appears to be a major victory for farm animals. Prior to today's statement, the USDA had consistently defended and advocated for sending downed cattle to USDA slaughterhouses.

The development is a tremendous step forward for the humane treatment of farmed animals. The action will prevent enormous animal suffering. Downed cattle, too sick or injured to even stand, are commonly dragged to slaughter with chains or pushed with forklifts or tractors, and suffer from painful abrasions, torn ligaments and broken bones.

With your active support, Farm Sanctuary has been investigating, documenting and exposing the cruel treatment of downed animals since 1986. While the immediate catalyst for this ban has been the discovery of mad cow disease in the US, our years of researching and compiling data, and lobbying the USDA, FDA and U.S. Congress provided the critical body of evidence and the history of repeated animal abuses and food safety hazards to substantiate the clear connection between 'downers' and mad cow disease. For the complete 17 year history of our campaign to stop downed animal cruelties, please visit http://www.nodowners.org/timeline.htm

=================
HUGE VICTORY FOR DOWNED ANIMALS:

In a landmark victory for animals, on Tuesday (12/30) the USDA issued a ban on the slaughter and marketing of downed animals. The ban comes one week to the day of the first confirmed case of Mad Cow disease was reported in the U.S., and after more than a decade of lobbying by animal protection groups seeking the ban.

Thanks to a torrent of media interest and an outpouring of emails, letters, and phone calls to Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, the USDA took decisive action today with Secretary Ann Veneman's announcement that "USDA will ban all downer cattle from the human food chain." While a number of states restrict the movement of downers at state-licensed facilities, the newly-announced federal ban will apply in all states and at all federally inspected slaughterhouses, which account for the vast majority of all animals slaughtered in the United States.

This is a great victory in the fight to implement more humane treatment for millions of farmed animals. At least 200,000 of these animals become "downed" every year in the U.S. With a ban on the sale and slaughter of downed animals, livestock owners will be forced to treat their animals more humanely so that they do not become nonambulatory in the first place. And those animals who do become too sick or injured to walk on their own will no longer have to suffer the cruelty of being dragged, beaten, or pushed with bulldozers to the killing floor.

Says Wayne Pacelle, a senior vice president of The HSUS, "We are delighted with Secretary Veneman's emphatic declaration that downed cattle are unfit for human consumption and will not be channeled into the human food supply. This decision also means that these animals will no longer be inhumanely treated by being dragged by chains or pushed by bulldozers to get them to slaughter.

Prad, I noticed you removed a question mark at the end of your article. Maybe you should have left it there for a while longer
I don't read anywhere about a better treatment of these animals. It might even get worse.
Downers are taken away from the human food chain. Good for us! But what happens to these downers? To the animal food chain? Do you think they will be better treated now all control can be abandoned?
Or am I too cynical?

Hi all,

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, now I'm not condoning the slaughter of downer animals or the massive beef industry here but here goes...

You are a small dairy farmer, you've got a milk cow that you've paid top dollar for, you've invested money in the care of this animal, medical and food and shelter. This morning you walk into the barn, it's 20 degrees out there and the wind is howling, your cow is down and obviously dying. What do you do?

Just want some insight as to what you think can be done

Regards,
Charle

Hi fjord,

That's a noble thought, but remember you're a small independent dairy farmer. The price of milk is controlled by the government which in turn is controlled by agribusiness, Due to last summer's drought you've had to buy feed to supplement poor crop production and that 30, 000 dollar tractor is on it's last legs! To top it off the twins need braces and your wife needs to start taking a very high priced prescription for her high blood pressure! And you don't have group rates for medical or dental insurance...if you even have insurance!

Have you seen what that vet charges also😲

Charlie
