the false alarms were the one guy-andrew wiles. he thought he'd proven it, but then discovered he'd been incorrect. so he looked at it again and solved it...although that was only one false alarm...
one of my lecturers spent his pHd time reading over "proofs" by random romanian generals etc who thought they'd found a really simple proof. he had to find the error...
i briefly studied linear and higher-degree diophantine equations last semester 😉 (fermat's last theorem is a rather spiffing example of a higher degree one)
