My best compromise so far:
MS 'malicious software removal tool' in accompaniment with 'AVG pro' but free edition is as good for none business use.
'Lavasoft Ad-Aware' in accompaniment with 'Spybot Search and Destroy'...it says they'll conflict but only for commercial reasons, one tends to find something the other hasn't. All free..

I've always been a big fan of AVG, but when they started adding all the browser toolbars and other crud, slowing down my moderately specced main work PC, I decided to chuck it.

Still a good product, if you don't mind the AV software sticking it's nose in EVERYWHERE. I know, I'm talking default install, but that is what most people use.

I like the AV software to get out the way.

I love MSE, and installed it after some nasties got through AVG. Full scan in MSE found and removed the malware.

Where are you taking MSE for Valentine's day?

I used AVG (free version) downloaded latest updates, ran it, found zero problems.
Downloaded MSE and it found 2 Java script scumware pacs. I then ran Superantispyware (another freebie but for cookies and such) it found 106 problems not picked up by either of the first ones, tracking adware cookies plus one other problem.

One thing weird: after running all three of those, a program tried to load up while I was in the middle typing to RHP, maybe you can tell me if it is benign:

"CR_FO.tmp_setup.exe"

I googled it and couldn't find a reference to it. Anyone hear about this, good or bad? This is the second time it tried to load up and I have no idea what it is.

Yes, I've heard others state issues with the latest generation 'specc'ed up' AVG...custom wise you can run it as it was years ago.
I've also found, as in my original post, it really is second to none when run in conjunction with the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool...I've had occasions when AVG missed something only for MS to announce it's found something when AVG was only seconds ago scanning...it always seems to happen this way and then as MS goes through the removal procedure, AVG proudly announces it's dealt with it lol..

I actually can't even remember the last time I had a virus-type scare. I had a drive-by malware drop on my machine a few years ago when I was trying out Panda AV, quickly sorted out by HiJackThis, SpyBot and MSRT, and then immediate uninstall of Panda.

Again, watch out for false positives. Many AV programs will err on the side of caution when the heuristic algorithms picks up something it thinks may be harmful.

Also, you will probably never install one of the malware removal apps that will pick up zero threats. That would be bad business. So they will ALWAYS identify a few 'threats' - which will give the user that warm fuzzy feelings of "Thank god I downloaded this one too!".

No idea what that file is. Find it and delete it.

About false positives, which one do you believe then? Like I said, AVG found zero, MSE found a couple not found by AVG and Superantispyware found a bunch of tracking cookies, not exactly spyware but that kind of thing ends up adding to your spam load. Are you saying there are no tracking cookies coming down the line?

Also, I did a search on my computer for that file, CR_FO etc., but came up empty. Funny how it tried to load in the system twice in one month. It is coming from somewhere for sure, I trust it about as far as I can throw it.

I don't think either MSE or AVG detect cookies. So if you run a program that does then of course it will find the things that the others didn't.

I think.

I think an awesome idea for a tv show would be you battling a new virus or malware program every week and the different tools you updated or downloaded to finally clean the offensive file off your computer.

Once your computer is clean, you would find the offending hacker who wrote the program and deal them YOUR OWN brand of justice.

Then you would meet with the person who wrote the anti-virus or anti-malware program for drinks in a dark bar with beautiful women on your arms... toast each other laughing and it would freeze frame the people at the table one at a time from different angles while playing the awesome theme music and credits.
