@torunn saidI can't see me needing it, but one can never say never.
Is there anyone you would go to to borrow 10,000 USD? Wouldn't you rather ask your bank, if absolutely necessary?
NO, I wouldn't go to a bank. I have money in the bank plus a credit line if needed to fall back on.
I have a few friends who could lend that to me and not even miss it. I've done well for myself torunn, and have made some great friends along the way. Of course I hope that day never comes that I need money.

@very-rusty saidI have the impression that you are pretty well off, so I didn't have you specifically in mind - but I myself would rather owe money to the bank than friends. Money can kill friendship. When my father, many decades ago, told my mother that he had lent a sum of money to somebody he new, my mother said: You might lose the money and also your friend. And he did.

So long as you stick to when you will be paying it back there shouldn't be any problems. I've never charged interest on any money I've lent out. Good Friends don't do that! I have a rule never to lend money to family though as they don't feel obligated to pay it back. I have how ever gifted them money if it was needed for a good reason, such as a lay down on a home.
When one grows up dirt poor, you learn to appreciate things more I believe. Especially when you work for it.

@torunn saidIt then hit him the guy wasn't actually a friend to begin with!

@very-rusty saidI think so too, and I believe he never intended to give back that money, but my father was a very kind-hearted man and didn't want to cause him trouble. My mother knew right away what might happen. The same thing happened to me in my teens - I lost money and the person I thought was my friend. In our family, we give money rather than lend it.

In one of my brother's cases that I lent the money to, which was a good amount for the lay down on a house, insisted to pay me back. He wanted to make sure he owed nobody anything on it. The lay down deposit he had to make was more than he had before his loan went through. If it wasn't made by a certain day someone else had a chance to get it, and they had the deposit that was required to put down. Money I wasn't expecting to ever see again so when he showed up at the door with the cash in an envelope, I just took it, but bought his two girls skates and helmet and knee pads, and a large swimming pool. 🙂

@very-rusty saidThat's kind and generous thoughts, Rusty - and also wise. What a lovely moment you shared with your brother.

@torunn saidIt was made of some kind of rubber I believe. It took two water trucks to fill it. Just the sparkle in my two nieces eyes and the smiles on their faces was payment enough for me. I told my brother tell them I'll get them what ever they want for grading. He called me and reminded me of what I said. He said what they want may be a little unreasonable, he meant the price. I told him to go ahead and do it! 🙂 It really gave me pleasure in doing something nice for them, it always does.
